Director of Engineering

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Director of Engineering to join a luxury hospitality property currently undergoing significant development and expansion. This is a unique opportunity to play a key role during the final stages of construction, pre-opening activities, and ongoing hotel operations.
The successful candidate will act as the critical link between the hotel operations team and external construction partners, ensuring projects are delivered to the highest standards whilst maintaining smooth day-to-day engineering operations across the property.
This position requires a practical leader who is comfortable both managing a team and personally resolving technical issues when required.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Maintenance Operations
- Lead the Engineering Department and oversee all technical operations across the hotel and residential apartment buildings.
- Manage a team of 3-4 technicians specialising in areas such as plumbing, pools, water systems, electrical systems, general maintenance and repairs.
- Ensure all hotel facilities, equipment and infrastructure are maintained to the highest standards.
- Personally assist with troubleshooting and resolving technical issues when required.
- Oversee preventative maintenance programmes and ensure timely completion of repairs.
Construction & Project Coordination
- Serve as the primary point of contact between hotel operations and construction teams.
- Monitor ongoing construction projects and identify defects, operational risks and quality concerns.
- Report issues to relevant stakeholders and coordinate corrective actions.
- Conduct inspections of newly completed buildings and facilities.
- Identify and resolve post-construction defects before handover to operations.
- Support the opening of newly completed buildings and facilities.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations and company standards.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments.
- Support emergency procedures and business continuity planning.
- Maintain engineering records, documentation and compliance reports.
Residential Facilities Management
- Oversee the maintenance and operation of residential apartment buildings associated with the property.
- Ensure a high standard of service and maintenance for residents and guests.
Candidate Profile
- Previous experience as a Director of Engineering, Chief Engineer, Site Manager, Technical Director, Facilities Manager, Civil Engineer or similar senior engineering position.
- Strong hands-on technical background across multiple disciplines including plumbing, water systems, pools, electrical systems, general maintenance and basic IT infrastructure.
- Experience working within hotels, resorts, mixed-use developments or large residential properties.
- Pre-opening experience within hospitality would be highly advantageous.
- Experience working alongside construction and development teams.
- Strong leadership skills with experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Ability to identify technical issues quickly and drive solutions through to completion.
- Flexible, adaptable and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
- Fluent German is essential.
- Basic to intermediate English required.
