Die Position
TheInstitute of Human Biology (IHB), embedded within Roche’s Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) Division, is a leading research institute focused on accelerating the development of transformative medicines. It specializes in developing novel and robust human model systems that functionally resemble human physiology and disease. By bridging the gap between academic discovery and industrial application, IHB facilitates the rapid translation of groundbreaking science into patient-focused solutions.
The Opportunity
We are building next-generation human kidney models by tackling a central unsolved problem in the field: how to generate organotypic, vascularized kidney organoids that show enhanced maturation.
As part of a newly funded IHB fellowship, you will drive an ambitious research program at the interface of stem cell biology, vascular biology, and single-cell genomics, with the goal of creating translationally relevant systems for drug discovery and safety.
In this role, you will define innovative approaches to uncover the biological principles of vascular–parenchymal interaction, ultimately helping to establish a new class of human model systems through the following responsibilities:
- Drive the development of vascularized iPSC-derived kidney organoids, with a focus on tissue specification and maturation
- Use single-cell genomics to dissect endothelial specification, nephron maturation, and cell–cell communication
- Work closely with bioengineers to integrate biology into perfusable, next-generation culture systems
- Translate biological insights into functional, predictive models relevant for human kidney safety
Who You Are
- A scientist with a PhD and a strong track record in iPSC-derived 3D tissue models or organoids. To qualify for this early-career position, you must have completed your doctoral studies within the last four years.
- Experienced in generating and analysing single-cell transcriptomic data and comfortable translating complex datasets into biological insight
- Scientifically ambitious, with the ability to drive new concepts rather than follow established protocols
- Ideally with a strong background in developmental biology, with expertise in kidney, vascular, or related organ systems
Additional Information
You will be embedded in a highly interdisciplinary ecosystem at IHB, working with leading experts in bioengineering, stem cell biology, and computational analysis, and closely connected to Roche’s drug discovery and safety teams.
This is a unique opportunity to define how human kidney models are built and used in the future—from fundamental biology to direct impact on drug development.
Application Process
To apply, please submit the following materials:
- Current CV: Please provide a comprehensive CV, including a full list of your peer-reviewed publications.
- Professional References: Include contact details for two references who can speak to your scientific expertise and professional character.
- Ph.D. Documentation: Provide an official diploma or certificate confirming your degree (if already obtained).
- Timeline& Availability: The start date of this position is 1st September 2026.
The initial duration is for 2 years, with the potential for extension.
