Purpose
The Second Captain is nautical responsible on board of one of the vessels managed and operated by the Rivertech Holding AG and is reporting directly to the captain.
The key role of the Second Captain is beside steering and maneuvering the vessel, manage and support the Nautical and Technical crew on board in all nautical matters that might occur. With the focus on:
· Safe navigation in compliance with all statutory regulations.
· To make sure that the guests feel comfortable.
· To be a role model for the entire crew.
· Captain’s representative onboard.
The Second Captain reports directly to the captain.
Responsibilities
➢ Security
- Overall responsibility for safety on board the ship.
- Compliance with the guidelines, instructions (nautical handbook) and regulations.
- Co-responsible for the impeccable cleanliness, hygiene and order on board.
- Testing planned maintenance and operation of all lifesaving and firefighting appliances.
- Planning and execution of the safety drills.
- Maintain and control the watch book (Night Watch).
- Train new employees and explain their duties within the internal safety system.
➢ Administration
- Monitor and update certificates, credentials and approvals.
- Responsible for the administrative process and timely submission of all mandatory reports.
- Exchange information with the departments involved (Management, Operations).
- Check whether the necessary patents for the driven route are present on board.
- Check if the nautical crew’s service books contain the necessary qualifications for operating form A1, A2 or B.
- Daily update of the crew scheduling.
➢ Additional duties
- Train employees. Ensure the company's grooming standards are always followed.
- Train new skippers, train and provide a patent to the Helmsman.
- Conduct frequent ship inspections.
- Participation in meetings and relevant company trainings.
- Good contact with the authorities, WSP, ports etc.
- Assignment and control of shipping work in the nautical field.
- Manage the sundeck according to safety needs and guests' expectations.
- Frequent inspection of mooring lines and wires.
- Ensure the crew wears minimum personal protective equipment.
➢ Steering
- Compliance with timetables and lock times to avoid incidents and delays.
- Cost-conscious use of all consumables (gas oil, water, lubricants).
- Maintain professionalism and safe ship operation.
Qualification Profile
- Must hold all necessary licenses/certificates for the relevant rivers and waterways.
- At least 1 year (preferably more) of work experience as a Helmsman.
- Languages: German / English / French (depending on the geographical location of the vessel)
- Interested in further education (e.g. certificate extension, language skills).
- Independent and flexible.
- Decisive and assertive.
- Strong team worker and able to motivate the crew.
- Shows ambition and initiative; perseverant.
Your deployment with the Rivertech Holding AG will depend on the statutory requirements for the following geographical areas:
➢ Rhine
- Rhine license km 1000 – 500 (Amsterdam - Mainz) minimal and/or Unions License including risk stretch nr. 5 Middle Rhine km 498.45 - 592 (Mainz-Kastel - Koblenz)
- Radar
- VHF
- Safety Expert (Sachkunde)
- Languages: German and English (mandatory), Dutch and French are an asset
➢ Danube
- Danube license km 0 - 1650 (Sulina - Budapest) or 1650 - 2411 (Budapest - Kelheim) preferably complete and/or Unions License including all the risk stretches between Passau and Budapest.

- Languages: German and English (mandatory), Russian is an asset
