Role Overview
As a Critical Facilities Engineer, you will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and reliability of mission‑critical data centre infrastructure, with a strong focus on electrical and mechanical systems. You will support 24/7 operations by ensuring all critical systems are maintained in line with Equinix standards, procedures, and safety requirements.
Working within a live, always‑on environment, you will exercise sound technical judgement when responding to alarms, incidents, and maintenance activities, while collaborating closely with internal teams and external vendors.
This role supports site resilience, availability, and continuous improvement across a high‑availability IBX data centre.
Key Responsibilities
Critical Facilities Operations
Operate, monitor, and maintain critical electrical and mechanical infrastructure, including power distribution, backup power systems, HVAC, fire suppression, and life‑safety systems
Perform planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and corrective maintenance on critical and non‑critical systems
Monitor the Building Management System (BMS) and respond to alarms, faults, and events requiring technical judgement
Operate critical infrastructure in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), method statements, and maintenance operating procedures (MOPs)
Support energy efficiency and reliability initiatives across site infrastructure
Work independently
Incident Response & Site Resilience
Respond to infrastructure incidents, failures, degraded conditions, and operational risks
Identify Single Points of Failure (SPOFs) and make recommendations to improve system resilience
Support root cause investigations and corrective actions following incidents
Vendor & Change Management
Support and oversee vendor maintenance and project activities within live environments
Review and approve work using permits, RAMS, and MOPs
Conduct start‑of‑work briefings and post‑work reviews to ensure tasks meet Equinix standards
Support updates to as‑built documentation, drawings, and technical records
Work Orders & Projects
Execute work orders, minor installs, and infrastructure changes
Support site projects and upgrades across electrical and mechanical systems
Troubleshoot auxiliary and site-support equipment to minimize operational impact
Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing
Work collaboratively with other Critical Facilities Engineers to resolve technical issues
Provide informal guidance or mentoring on general Critical Facility activities
Communicate inventory and spares requirements to maintain readiness
Write Standard Operating Procedures and Emergency Operating Procedures when required.
Skills & Experience
Strong experience working in data centres or other mission‑critical environments (e.g. hospitals, utilities, industrial sites)
Solid understanding of electrical distribution systems, backup power, and supporting mechanical cooling plant
Experience operating live infrastructure in accordance with formal procedures and permits
Able to work effectively as part of a team or independently within a 24/7 shift rotation.
Calm, methodical approach to incident response and fault resolution
Qualifications
Electrical or technical qualification, or equivalent proven experience
Several years’ hands‑on experience in critical facilities, engineering, or infrastructure operations
