Job Description
Are you a strategic commercial leader ready to drive meaningful impact in the pharmaceutical industry? We are looking for an exceptional Business Unit Director to join our Affiliate Leadership Team and take full ownership of a high-performing Commercial Unit. This is a senior leadership opportunity for a results-oriented professional who thrives at the intersection of strategy, operations, and people development.
About the Role
The Business Unit Director holds overall accountability for an assigned Commercial Unit, with a focus on both long-term strategy and day-to-day operations. As a core member of the Affiliate Leadership Team (ALT), you will shape commercial direction, lead high-performing teams, and partner with stakeholders across the organisation to deliver sustainable business results.
Key Responsibilities
As Business Unit Director, you will be responsible for the full breadth of commercial leadership across your division:
-
Drive and own the Commercial Unit's Profit & Loss (P&L), coordinating and validating financial processes and Commercial models before integration into the plan book.
-
Lead the strategic planning process across all Brands within the division — reviewing, signing off, and resourcing plans to ensure successful implementation.
-
Hold overall accountability for Commercial operations strategy and manage day-to-day commercial activities across the unit.
-
Collaborate across Brand functions, building a culture of cooperation and resolving conflicts in priorities to keep teams aligned and effective.
-
Coach, develop, and assess Brand Team Leaders (BTLs) and the wider division team against defined KPIs, providing continuous, constructive feedback and identifying opportunities for improvement.
-
Actively participate in Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP), presenting and defending current market developments and demand forecasts.
-
Contribute meaningfully to Affiliate business planning processes.
-
Build and maintain strong networks with Area and WEC colleagues, and liaise effectively with key Company stakeholders.
Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate with a strong blend of commercial expertise, leadership experience, and industry knowledge:
-
Master's degree, with a preference for Marketing or Economics.
-
Proven experience in a senior commercial role within the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical sector.
-
Specialty Care experience is preferred but not required. We place value as well on experience across our broader portfolio, including Immunology, Oncology, and related therapeutic areas
-
Solid understanding of financial processes and company planning procedures.
-
Broad knowledge of non-commercial functions and the ability to work effectively across disciplines.
-
Awareness of how local and global events influence business plans, strategies, and organisational priorities.
-
A track record of people leadership at varying levels of seniority and cross-functional experience.
-
Ability to stay current with evolving marketing and sales trends.
-
Confidence communicating business needs at C-suite executive level.
-
Candidates should be willing and able to relocate internationally for future assignments within the company in the mid-term
Critical Skills
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following leadership competencies:
-
Strategic thinking: Ability to create business strategies that balance short-term requirements with long-range plans, and to align your area’s priorities with the broader organisational direction.
-
Inspirational leadership: Lead and motivate multi-disciplinary teams by modelling the right behaviours, encouraging open exchange of ideas, and leveraging cross-functional learning.
-
Decisive problem-solving: Make difficult decisions under pressure, anticipate challenges, develop contingency plans, and act swiftly to resolve issues.
-
People development: Recognise, reward, and promote individuals based on performance, potential, and competency development.
-
Performance management: Set clear and comprehensive goals, communicate expectations, and deliver timely and balanced feedback with appropriate follow-through.
