Your role and responsibilities
The mission of this team is to bring modern and disruptive power electronic solutions from research into product development. We improve our products by holistic optimization, pushing forward novel converter topologies as well as optimizing key components. By joining us, you will participate in idea generation at the frontier of academic research and industrial applications, as well as in the development of advanced technologies for ABB’s products.

The main responsibilities include

Own the lab infrastructure (Laborinfrastruktur), including coordination with maintenance (Instandhaltung), organizing calibration (Kalibrierung) of equipment, and managing lab supplies (Verbrauchsmaterialien).

Ensure lab safety (Sicherheit) and organize/structure lab spaces for multiple ongoing projects.

Support scientific work by designing and building power electronics prototypes (Leistungselektronik Prototypen) up to medium voltage (Mittelspannung) and megawatt power.

Assist in commissioning test setups (Inbetriebnahme von Prüfaufbauten) and perform testing together with scientific staff (Wissenschaftler).

Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders (Teamfähigkeit), and supervise apprentices (Lernende / Auszubildende) in daily tasks.
Qualifications for the role

Completed apprenticeship as an automation technician (Automatiker EFZ) with practical experience in machining (Fräsen, Bohren, Drehen, Handarbeit), and be able to conversate in English.

Additional education from a Higher Technical School or University of Applied Sciences (Höhere Fachschule HF / Fachhochschule FH) in power electronics, energy systems, or similar is a strong advantage.

Experience with CAD design (CAD-Konstruktion) using tools such as Creo, Solid Edge, SolidWorks, or equivalent; PCB design (Leiterplattendesign) knowledge is a plus (Altium Designer).

Solid experience in electrical circuit design (Schaltungsdesign), grounding concepts (Erdung), and wiring standards (Verdrahtungsrichtlinien).

Hands-on experience building and prototyping power electronic systems (Leistungselektronik Systeme), including mechanical work, tooling (Werkzeuge), and implementing ad-hoc improvements.

Basic knowledge of electrical standards (e.g., NIV / NIN / SNR 464022) and familiarity with lab technologies such as 3D printing (3D-Druck), LabVIEW, and laser cutting/engraving (Laserschneider / Lasergravur).
